ATLANTA--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--[ Acuity Brands ] (NYSE: AYI), a market leader in innovative energy-efficient lighting and control solutions, is nearing completion of the first phase of a substantial West Coast rail yard lighting project using its [ Holophane® ] brand of luminaires. The Holophane brand has been a recognized leader in high-quality and lowest total cost of ownership lighting solutions for commercial, industrial, and outdoor applications for more than 110 years.

"The Port is very appreciative of the support Holophane provided during design, construction and maintenance of prior projects, including servicing the poles and luminaires whenever questions come up"

The Port of Long Beach is part of the City of Long Beach in Southern California. Together with the Port of Los Angeles, the Port of Long Beach handles 40% of all shipments coming to the U.S. from all over the world. It also is home to several cruise lines.

In a project with two overlapping phases, Acuity Brands was selected as the lighting supplier expanding the Container Terminal Storage Facility at the Port of Long Beach, which spans more than 100 acres. The first phase includes a maintenance warehouse, and the lighting component consists of nine 120 foot poles with 12 1000W high pressure sodium, [ High Mast Advanced Optix ] units per pole. The construction started in December 2009 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010. The second phase includes a rail yard facility that accommodates shipping to and from the Rocky Mountain states. Construction started in January 2010 and the lighting portion of the project consists of thirteen 120 foot poles with 12 1000W high pressure sodium, High Mast Advanced Optix units per pole. Construction is on-going and is expected to be completed in 2011.

Since 1975, the Port of Long Beach has used various types of Holophane high mast luminaires such as the HMST®, HMSDa" and HMSPa" units. Holophane's high mast fixtures with glass reflectors are a great fit for the Port because the luminaires are capable of withstanding the demanding conditions associated with ocean atmospheres and environments.

The High Mast Advanced Optix (HMAO) Series is the next generation of high mast lighting from Holophane. The reflector assembly in the HMAO Series includes an open ventilated glass piece and a spun aluminum cover with specular panels hermetically sealed between the glass and the cover. The design of this innovative patent pending reflector assembly produces 10-15% higher efficiency than competitive products. The HMAO Series offers the ability to maximize pole spacing and reduce energy costs, while compatible with existing mounting capabilities. The open ventilated design minimizes dirt depreciation of luminance, as the exposed surface of the glass on the inside of the reflector is continuously cleaned by the chimney effect of the flow of air through the reflector. The HMAO Series comes in a variety of lighting distribution patterns and cutoff classifications.

"When [ HMAO ] was introduced, Holophane ran detailed lighting calculations for the Port of Long Beach confirming its efficiency met the rigorous environmental requirements of the Port , even when compared to our other industry renowned high mast fixtures with light pollution abatement features," said Jack Ries, Acuity Brands Lighting Vice President and General Manager, Holophane. The Port specified that both the high mast pole and the luminaire be supplied only by Acuity Brandsa™ Holophane. "The Port is very appreciative of the support Holophane provided during design, construction and maintenance of prior projects, including servicing the poles and luminaires whenever questions come up," states Ries.
