ACS CrossSafe Captures Drivers Illegally Passing School Buses

CrossSafe is designed to change driver behavior and lead to a reduction of collisions, injuries and fatalities.

Tested across multiple municipalities, ACS CrossSafe captures high-quality [ video ] of cars passing through stop signs on school buses a" a traffic violation and a significant hazard to school children waiting to board their bus. The video is watermarked with time, date, GPS coordinates and other information needed for proving the violation. At no cost to schools or tax payers, ACS manages the entire process from beginning to end including the review of violations captured by video, delivering the evidence to law enforcement for electronic issuance and, ultimately, processing and mailing the fines to the violator.

According to the National Association for Pupil Transportation¹ over the past 10 years an average of 29 children have been killed every year in school bus-related pedestrian accidents. These accidents took place while the child was either getting on or off a school bus, or while waiting at the school bus stop, and were typically the result of drivers illegally passing stopped buses. The American Academy of Pediatrics² reports that 17,000 children seek treatment in hospital emergency rooms due to school bus-related accidents annually. Although 42 percent of injuries relate to crashes, nearly a quarter happen as children were boarding or leaving school buses.

As part of the program, school districts can receive rebates from the fines collected from the offenses, which can be used to invest in current or new student safety programs.
