TOPIC:
The Transparent OR: Orchestrating Care with Real-time Location-enabled Workflow Automation
Optimizing patient throughput and delivering a superior experience for patients and staff requires making patient flow and the resources dedicated to patient care as transparent as possible. Accurate, complete, and real-time information on the location and status of patients, staff and assets will reduce delays in the series of handoffs that comprise a patient's surgery encounter. The more seamless these transitions occur the greater the potential for an OR to increase its effective capacity and the safety of care. Without patient flow transparency, OR units can inadvertently operate as independent black boxes compromising caregivers' ability to anticipate and manage their workflow. In 2007, Lehigh Valley's Cedar Crest campus implemented a RTLS-enabled patient tracking system from Patient Care Technology Systems ([ www.pcts.com ]). The Amelior ORTracker® system was installed with an integrated ultrasonic locating network for automatic location data capture.
