ATLANTA--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--[ Acuity Brands ] (NYSE: AYI), a market leader in innovative energy efficient lighting and control solutions has announced a first of its kind industry reference site that combines up-to date energy codes from multiple jurisdictions into a single source that can be used by designers of lighting and advanced controls applications. For engineers and architects, finding the applicable energy codes, as well as related compliance details, has posed tremendous challenges.
"Lighting design has to take into account local code requirements and at a minimum, our customers need to know basic rules, such as those governing lighting power density requirements and acceptable control methodologies. This Website includes all of this information."
Where to go for accurate and up-to-date energy codes? That was the challenge [ design-assist engineers ] at Acuity Brandsa™ [ Lighting Control & Design ] (LC&D) faced when assisting architects and engineers with designing and optimizing energy-efficient lighting control solutions.
aFor our customers, success hinges on completing projects on time and on budget; the potential for last minute redesign because of some unknown local or regional code requirement presents an undesirable risk that can be addressed up front,a said David Wilson, Acuity Brands Lighting, General Manager, LC&D.
Experience had shown that aenergy codea Websites from the Department of Energy (DOE) and Building Codes Assistance Project (BCAP) were inadequate for providing the necessary information. These Websites sometimes fail to stay up-to-date, lack compliance requirements, or omit various jurisdictions that publish their own codes.
The Acuity Brandsa™ LC&D team decided to do something about the lack of a unified resource. They developed a database of every code official in every jurisdiction in the United States known to have its own code requirements, and implemented a quarterly phone survey to each code official to verify or update state energy codes, locally adopted energy codes and local variances from state codes.
aThe result is the only known [ web-based resource ] with up-to-date and accurate energy codes for virtually every jurisdiction in the US (with Canada to be added soon),a Wilson said. aLighting design has to take into account local code requirements and at a minimum, our customers need to know basic rules, such as those governing lighting power density requirements and acceptable control methodologies. This Website includes all of this information.a
Acuity Brands encourages customers to use this valuable resource. The company also encourages customer feedback. aIta™s a free service to the design community and we encourage engineers and architects to help us keep it up-to-date and suggest improvements,a Wilson said.
