


Schaeffer's By the Numbers: Why General Motors Corporation Is Still in the Dow
CINCINNATI--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--After a lengthy, holiday-induced hiatus, we're back in the By the Numbers saddle this week with a look at General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM). The automaker recently received its first cash injection from the federal government, but GM isn't out of the woods yet. In fact, the stock's woeful performance has many Wall Street denizens wondering when the Detroit dinosaur will be booted from the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA).
A look at past Dow losers
The most recent equity to be bumped from the Dow is American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG). This company's problems are so well-known we feel no need to rehash them; following its near-collapse, AIG was removed from the blue-chip roster in exchange for Kraft Foods (NYSE: KFT). In the 52 weeks leading up to its removal, shares of AIG shed a whopping 93%.
