HC had ruled that installation of CCTV cameras inside a shared ancestral home without consent of co-occupants violates fundamental right to privacy under Article 21 of Constitution.

The Supreme Court of India upheld a Calcutta High Court ruling that invalidated a lower court's directive for installing CCTV cameras inside a shared matrimonial home, reinforcing the right to privacy. The case involved a woman who sought divorce and was subjected to the lower court's order for surveillance to monitor her husband's behavior. The Supreme Court, in its decision, emphasized that such an intrusive measure infringed upon the fundamental right to privacy, as previously established in the landmark 2017 K.S. Puttaswamy judgment. The court clarified that while surveillance might be permissible in public spaces or under specific conditions, it is not justified within the private confines of a home. This ruling sets a precedent that privacy within one's home is paramount and cannot be overridden by lower courts without substantial justification.
