Xerox Helps Brampton Transit Ridership Reach an All-Time High

DALLAS--([ ])--Public [ transportation ] is more popular than ever in the Canadian city of Brampton. The recent SmartBus makeover implemented by [ Xerox ] (NYSE: XRX) makes public transit more predictable and popular and earned Brampton a prestigious government award.

Xerox helped Brampton install and launch the SmartBus system in September 2010 when Brampton first introduced its bus rapid transit (BRT) system, Zm. Ridership reached an all-time high in 2011, increasing 18 percent a" more than tripling the national average of five percent for the first six months of 2011, according to the Canadian Urban Transit Association. In total, 16.3 million riders used Brampton Transit in 2011, an increase of more than 2.5 million riders from 2010. This is on top of a 12 percent increase in ridership in 2010, or 1.5 million passengers.

Key features of the SmartBus system include:

  • Electronic message signs displaying schedule and real-time bus information at terminals and on-board LED signs showing next stop information.
  • Interactive Voice Response provides telephone access to real-time bus schedule and route information.
  • Next Ride using SmartTraveler Plus gives real-time schedule and route information via web access, mobile web access, email and SMS text.
  • Mobile Data Terminal allows Operators and On-Road Supervisors to communicate with Dispatch through text messaging and vehicle diagnostics.
  • On-board security cameras improve operator and passenger safety.
  • Automated Passenger Counting provides 98 percent accuracy of the number of riders using this bus fleet and routes.
