Immediate Response
Bay Village Police Officer Emily Reynolds, who was on patrol in the area at the time, was the first to arrive at the scene. “We responded within seconds, and Officer Reynolds immediately established a perimeter while dispatch called for EMS and a paramedic unit,” the department’s press release states. The Bay Village Fire Department was called to the scene at 10:48 p.m. The emergency response was swift, with a paramedic team arriving within ten minutes of the initial 911 call. The paramedics stabilized Lawson and transported him to the nearby St. Joseph’s Medical Center, where he was treated for a fractured sternum and broken ribs. He was admitted to the surgical ward and is currently recovering.
In addition to the injuries sustained by Lawson, the family that owns the Maple Lane house, the Wadsworths, suffered significant property damage. The front porch, windows, and the first‑floor exterior walls were shattered. A structural engineer from the Ohio Department of Transportation, who was called in to assess the damage, confirmed that the house would require extensive reconstruction and that the roof had been partially compromised by the impact. “The force of the collision was enough to dislodge the roof in some areas, and we expect a full restoration will cost upwards of $120,000,” the engineer said.
Victims and Family Statements
The Wadsworth family, who have lived in Bay Village for more than 25 years, were present at home when the truck crashed into their yard. “We were in the kitchen, just making coffee, when the truck crashed into the front of our house,” said Sarah Wadsworth, 58. “We heard a huge noise, and then everything was in a blur. We were lucky that we didn’t have any other family members inside the house when it happened.” Sarah’s husband, Michael, 61, was in the driveway and was only slightly shaken. Both were taken to the hospital for observation but were released in stable condition the following day.
Lawson, who lives in nearby Cleveland, expressed remorse for the incident in an interview with Cleveland19’s local reporter, Maria Gonzalez. “I was driving fast because I had a deadline for a job interview, and I didn’t realize I was driving on the wrong side of the street,” Lawson said. “I’m so sorry for the damage to the house and for the shock I caused the Wadsworths.”
Investigative Findings
The Cleveland Police Department’s Traffic Division launched an immediate investigation. The preliminary report indicates that Lawson’s vehicle was traveling at an estimated speed of 45 mph at the time of the collision, far above the 35 mph speed limit on Walnut Avenue. The driver’s breathalyzer test returned a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.09, well above the Ohio legal limit of 0.08. The vehicle was also found to have a broken rearview mirror, which may have contributed to Lawson’s inability to see the approaching residential street.
The report cites “partial failure of the vehicle’s braking system” as a contributing factor. A mechanic from the Cleveland Auto Repair Association confirmed that Lawson’s truck had recently had brake pads replaced, but the technician had reported that the braking system was “not fully functioning.” The brake system failure may have been caused by a defect in the new brake pads, an issue that the manufacturer is currently investigating.
Legal and Community Impact
Lawson has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, reckless driving, and driving under the influence. The case will be heard in the Cuyahoga County Court, and his lawyer, Rebecca Miller, is scheduled to appear on November 4. Miller is currently preparing a defense that will focus on the mechanical failure of Lawson’s vehicle.
Bay Village’s City Council met in an emergency session to discuss the crash and its implications for community safety. “This incident has highlighted the need for better traffic enforcement on our main arteries,” said Councilmember John T. Kline. “We will be working with the state to increase patrols and to consider installing additional traffic cameras to monitor speed violations.”
The Bay Village Fire Department’s Chief, Luis Cruz, announced that the department will review its current response protocols and will increase training for emergency medical response teams. “We are always looking for ways to improve our response time and to better protect the community,” Cruz said.

Looking Forward
The Wadsworths have expressed gratitude to the local community and to the responders for their swift actions. “We’re just grateful that no one was seriously injured,” Sarah Wadsworth said. “We’re looking forward to rebuilding and getting back to our normal lives.” Meanwhile, Lawson remains in treatment, and the legal proceedings will determine the final outcome of this tragic event. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, the consequences of impaired driving, and the need for vigilant traffic enforcement to protect Ohio’s residents.
