Highway 50/Trojan Lane Interchange Project Seeks Public Input
Locale: UNITED STATES

OMAHA, Neb. - March 19th, 2026 - The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is actively seeking public feedback on a significant infrastructure project poised to reshape traffic flow and enhance safety at the intersection of Highway 50 and Trojan Lane in Sarpy County. An open house is scheduled for tomorrow, March 20th, offering residents a crucial opportunity to learn about the planned improvements and voice their concerns or suggestions.
The project, currently in the final stages of design, addresses growing congestion and safety concerns at the increasingly busy interchange. Sarpy County has experienced substantial population growth in recent years, particularly in the vicinity of Highway 50 and Trojan Lane. This growth has placed considerable strain on existing infrastructure, leading to increased commute times, bottlenecks during peak hours, and a higher incidence of traffic incidents.
NDOT officials state the core objective is to create a more efficient and safer interchange that can accommodate current and future traffic demands. While specific details of the planned reconstruction haven't been fully released, preliminary reports suggest a potential shift away from the current at-grade intersection towards a fully-separated interchange - likely a diamond or single-point urban interchange (SPUI) design. These designs eliminate left turns across oncoming traffic, significantly reducing the risk of collisions. A SPUI, in particular, would consolidate all left-turning traffic onto a single intersection, governed by a single signal, streamlining traffic movement.
"We understand that construction projects of this magnitude can be disruptive, and we are committed to minimizing that disruption while maximizing the long-term benefits for the community," stated NDOT spokesperson, Emily Carter, in a press release. "The open house provides a vital forum for us to share our plans, answer questions, and incorporate public input before we finalize the design and begin construction."
The proposed improvements aren't limited to the interchange itself. NDOT is also evaluating potential upgrades to the connecting roadways, including widening sections of Highway 50 and Trojan Lane to accommodate increased traffic volume. Pedestrian and bicycle accommodations are also a key consideration, with plans to incorporate dedicated pathways and crosswalks to enhance safety for non-motorized users. This aligns with NDOT's broader strategic goal of promoting multi-modal transportation options throughout the state.
Construction is currently slated to begin in late 2026, with an estimated completion date in late 2028 or early 2029, contingent on weather conditions and material availability. NDOT anticipates phased construction to maintain at least partial access throughout the project's duration, although significant traffic delays are expected, particularly during peak construction periods. The department plans to utilize real-time traffic monitoring and dynamic message signs to keep motorists informed of road closures and detours.
The economic impact of the project is also significant. Improved infrastructure will not only facilitate smoother commutes but also enhance access for businesses and support future economic development in Sarpy County. The project is expected to create numerous construction jobs and stimulate local economic activity.
The public open house will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, at the Sarpy County Fairgrounds. NDOT engineers and project managers will be on hand to present detailed project maps, answer individual questions, and gather feedback from attendees. Residents can also submit comments online through the NDOT website, [ dot.nebraska.gov ]. NDOT encourages all interested parties to attend the open house or submit their comments online to ensure their voices are heard.
Looking ahead, NDOT is already planning further infrastructure improvements in Sarpy County to address the region's continued growth. A feasibility study is underway to assess the need for a new east-west arterial connecting Highway 50 to Highway 370, which could provide an alternative route for commuters and alleviate congestion on existing roadways. The department is also exploring options for expanding public transportation services in the area to offer residents more sustainable transportation choices.
This interchange project represents a substantial investment in Sarpy County's transportation future, and NDOT's commitment to public engagement is critical to ensuring a successful outcome.
