This Brandon fire isn't an isolated incident. HCFR has seen a concerning uptick in residential fires over the past year, prompting a renewed focus on community outreach and preventative education. While population growth contributes to an increased number of potential fire incidents, officials also point to factors like aging housing stock and an increase in the use of lithium-ion batteries - commonly found in e-bikes, scooters, and other modern devices - as potential drivers of the trend. Lithium-ion battery fires, in particular, are notoriously difficult to extinguish and can rapidly escalate.

"We've been actively working to educate the public about the risks associated with these batteries," explained HCFR spokesperson, Captain Eva Rostova. "Improper charging, damaged batteries, and the use of non-approved charging equipment are all contributing factors. We urge residents to only use certified chargers, to avoid overcharging, and to store batteries in a cool, dry place."

The Critical Role of Smoke Detectors - and Beyond

As always, HCFR reiterates the vital importance of working smoke detectors. "Smoke detectors are your first line of defense," Captain Rostova emphasized. "They provide the early warning needed to escape safely. We strongly recommend having detectors on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. And, importantly, test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year."

However, smoke detectors are no longer the sole focus of fire safety recommendations. HCFR is now promoting a more comprehensive approach, including:

• Home Escape Plans: Families are encouraged to develop and practice a home escape plan, identifying two ways out of each room and a designated meeting place outside the home.
• Electrical Safety Checks: Residents are advised to have their electrical systems inspected regularly by a qualified electrician, particularly in older homes.
• Cooking Safety: Unattended cooking is a leading cause of house fires. HCFR urges residents to never leave cooking unattended, and to keep flammable materials away from the stovetop.
• Proper Storage of Flammable Materials: Gasoline, propane, and other flammable liquids should be stored in approved containers and away from heat sources.
• Community Risk Reduction Programs: HCFR actively runs programs targeting vulnerable populations, such as senior citizens and low-income families, providing free smoke detectors and fire safety education.

Hillsborough County officials are currently evaluating options for increasing funding for fire prevention programs.
