Kingston Grieves After Halloween House Fire Claims Life
Locale: UNITED STATES

KINGSTON, N.H. - February 1st, 2026 - The quiet town of Kingston continues to grapple with the lingering grief following a devastating house fire that claimed the life of 68-year-old Robert Higgins on Halloween night, October 31st, 2025. While the initial report, released by the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's office, confirmed Mr. Higgins' death, the weeks since have revealed a portrait of a beloved community member and spurred a deeper investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Firefighters were dispatched to Mr. Higgins' residence on Mill Road around 8:30 p.m. on Halloween evening. Reports from first responders indicated a rapidly escalating fire that quickly engulfed a significant portion of the single-family home. Crews battled the intense blaze for nearly six hours, finally bringing it under control around 2:00 a.m. Despite their valiant efforts, Mr. Higgins was discovered deceased within the ruins of his home.
While the official cause of the fire remains under investigation, the State Fire Marshal's office has indicated that the investigation is now focused on potential electrical malfunctions, specifically examining older wiring within the historic Mill Road property. The house, built in 1952, was known locally for its charm but also for requiring consistent upkeep. Neighbors have shared accounts of Mr. Higgins diligently maintaining the property himself, often seen working on various repairs. This has led investigators to explore whether a DIY electrical project might have inadvertently contributed to the ignition.
Beyond the immediate tragedy, the Kingston community is rallying to support each other. Mr. Higgins was a long-time resident, known for his gentle nature and willingness to help others. He was a fixture at local events, volunteering regularly at the Kingston Food Pantry and actively participating in the town's historical society. Several residents have described him as a "silent pillar" of the community, always present and helpful without seeking recognition.
"Robert was the kind of person who always had a smile and a helping hand," said Martha Peterson, a neighbor of over 20 years. "He always kept to himself, but he was always there if you needed anything. Halloween was one of his favorite nights, handing out candy to all the kids. It's just heartbreaking to think about that now."
The Kingston Fire Department, still reeling from the loss, is actively reminding residents about the importance of fire safety, particularly during the colder months. They have announced a series of free smoke detector installation and fire safety education workshops scheduled throughout February. Chief David Miller stated, "This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of fire and the importance of having working smoke detectors. We urge all residents to check their detectors regularly and to be mindful of potential fire hazards."
The investigation is also examining the possibility of lithium-ion battery related fires, a growing concern across the nation. The proliferation of devices powered by these batteries--from e-bikes to power tools--has led to an increase in fires, often difficult to extinguish due to thermal runaway. Investigators are meticulously sifting through the debris to determine if any such devices were present in the home.
The Kingston community has established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and to help rebuild Mr. Higgins' life through donations to the Kingston Food Pantry in his memory. The outpouring of support demonstrates the profound impact he had on those around him. The Fire Marshal's office continues to ask anyone with information related to the fire to contact the Kingston Fire Department. The hope remains that a thorough investigation will not only provide closure for the community but also prevent similar tragedies in the future.
