  • Hundreds of thousands of students in Georgia will be eligible for $6,500 vouchers to pay for private school tuition or home-schooling expenses.

The Georgia Senate passed a bill on March 14, 2024, known as the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act, which introduces a voucher program allowing students to use up to $6,500 in public funds for private school tuition or homeschooling expenses. This initiative, supported by Governor Brian Kemp, aims to provide educational choice to families, particularly those with children in the lowest-performing 25% of public schools. The bill passed with a vote of 33-23, reflecting a partisan divide with most Republicans in favor and Democrats against. Critics, including Democrats and public education advocates, argue that the program could divert necessary funds from public schools, potentially exacerbating educational inequalities. The legislation now moves to the House for further consideration.
