EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 21, 2010) - Spring is here and so is the risk of hitting a natural gas line. ATCO Gas is working to prevent that.
With homeowners and contractors eager to break ground, ATCO Gas is reminding people to plan ahead and call Alberta One-Call, a free service, at 1.800.242.3477. Calls should be made a minimum 48 hours before digging begins. It's the best way to avoid hitting a natural gas line.
"Safety is paramount at ATCO Gas," said Brian Hahn, President, ATCO Gas. "Our goal is to eliminate gas line hits because anytime a line is hit, there's the potential for tragedy."
Last year, 685 natural gas lines were ruptured or severed in the ATCO Gas service area. In almost half of those incidents, homeowners or contractors did not contact Alberta One-Call to locate the lines.
Locating underground utilities prior to excavation is an important first step. Knowing how to properly expose the marked gas lines is also critical, especially when digging within one metre. To expose the gas line, use the markings as a guide, keep the shovel at a shallow angle and carefully remove small layers of soil until the gas line is uncovered.
