USPS Honors Quilter Rosie Lee Jones with New Stamp Series
Locale: UNITED STATES

ATLANTA, GA - March 27th, 2026 - The United States Postal Service today officially launched a new series of commemorative stamps honoring the life and artistry of Rosie Lee Jones, a celebrated quilter whose vibrant and deeply personal works have left an indelible mark on American folk art and cultural heritage. The unveiling, held at the Atlanta History Center, drew a large crowd of quilting enthusiasts, historians, and community members eager to celebrate Jones's enduring legacy.
Jones, a self-taught artist who resided in rural Georgia for much of her life, became nationally renowned for her intricate quilts that weren't merely functional bed coverings, but powerful visual narratives of African American life, history, and spirituality. Her quilts often depicted scenes of everyday life - farming, family gatherings, church services - alongside more complex allegorical representations of the struggles and triumphs of her community. Using a stunning array of colors and patterns, she transformed humble fabrics into breathtaking works of art.
The stamp set itself is a testament to the richness of Jones's work. The USPS chose to feature a series of photographs showcasing details from several of her most iconic quilts. These aren't simply reproductions; they are carefully selected images that highlight the texture, the vibrant color palettes, and the meticulous stitchwork that characterized Jones's style. Alongside the quilt imagery, the set also includes a striking portrait of Jones herself, capturing her warm and resolute spirit.
"Rosie Lee Jones was more than just a quilter; she was a storyteller," explained Mark Gibbs, USPS spokesperson, at the unveiling ceremony. "Each quilt was a chapter in her ongoing narrative, a way to preserve memories, share experiences, and connect with her ancestors. We at the USPS are proud to honor her contributions to American art and culture with this stamp series."
The selection of Jones for this honor comes after years of advocacy from the quilting community and arts organizations. Susan Miller, curator at the Atlanta History Center, played a pivotal role in bringing Jones's work to a wider audience. "For years, Rosie's quilts were largely known within quilting circles and among collectors," Miller stated. "It's a wonderful recognition of her artistry, but more importantly, it's a way to honor a really significant piece of Georgia's cultural heritage, and, frankly, American history. Her quilts are primary sources, documenting a period and a people often overlooked in traditional historical accounts."
The Atlanta History Center currently houses a significant collection of Jones's quilts, and attendance has surged in recent years as more people have become aware of her work. The Center plans to expand its exhibit dedicated to Jones, incorporating the new stamps and offering educational programs that explore the history of quilting and its significance in African American culture.
The impact of Rosie Lee Jones extends beyond the aesthetic beauty of her quilts. She served as a mentor to countless aspiring quilters, generously sharing her knowledge and skills. Her approach to quilting, emphasizing improvisation and personal expression, has inspired a generation of artists to embrace their own unique voices. Furthermore, Jones's work contributed significantly to the growing recognition of African American quilting as a legitimate and valuable art form.
Many quilters today are building on the traditions established by Jones, using quilting as a means of social commentary, political activism, and personal storytelling. The USPS stamp series is expected to further ignite interest in this art form and encourage a new generation of quilters to pick up a needle and thread.
The stamps are available for purchase online at usps.com and at post offices nationwide. Beyond simply sending mail, these stamps offer a small but significant way to keep the memory and artistry of Rosie Lee Jones alive, stitching her legacy into the fabric of American life.
