  • The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands awarded 91 turnkey homes today as a part of Phase 2 of the Pu'uhona project.

On April 22, 2023, a significant milestone was celebrated in Maui as 91 Native Hawaiian families received keys to their new homes in the Puʻunani subdivision of Waikapū, marking the completion of a project that began in 2017. The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) facilitated this development, which not only provided affordable housing but also aimed to foster a sense of community and cultural connection among the beneficiaries. The event was attended by Governor Josh Green, who highlighted the importance of such initiatives in addressing the housing needs of Native Hawaiians, and emphasized the state's commitment to further developments. The new homeowners expressed immense gratitude and relief, noting the long wait and the significance of finally having a place to call their own, surrounded by fellow Native Hawaiians.
