Massachusetts Team in 1st Place After 3 Rounds at the 2012 National School SCRABBLE Championship in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla., April 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Two 8th graders from Carlisle, MA currently lead the field of 4th-8th graders from all over the country and Canada competing for the $10,000 top prize at the 2012 National School SCRABBLE® Championship taking place at the Royal Pacific Resort.  Max Bohn and Sam Heinrich are 3-0 with a +500 point spread.  They are followed by former National School SCRABBLE® Champions from North Carolina Andy Hoang and Erik Salgado, both 8th graders with a 3-0 record and +454 point spread.  Rounding out the top three, also 3-0 with a +352 point spread, are the Long Island Linguists Kyle Imperato, 7th grade and John Schuman, 8th grade. This is the 10th anniversary of the event which also falls on the birthday of Alfred Mosher Butts, the inventor of SCRABBLE®.

Two 600+ point wins were highlights of Day 1 along with two plays scoring over 100 points each TRICKIER (101) and FICKLEST (104).  A few unusual words played were KEX (a dry hollow stalk), TARLETAN (a cotton fabric) and GUARANI (a monetary unit of Paraguay).
