TORONTO, June 2, 2011 /CNW/ - United Steelworkers (USW) members will be protesting at tomorrow's meeting of Intertape Polymer Group (TSX:ITP) shareholders at the Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto.
WHAT: | Protest at Intertape Polymer Group shareholders meeting |
WHERE: | Royal York Hotel, Toronto |
WHEN: | 10 a.m., Friday, June 3, 2011 |
WHO: | Steelworkers on strike for nearly three years at Intertape's ECP plant |
In August 2008, 84 members of USW Local 1-500 were forced on strike at Intertape Group's Engineered Coated Products plant in Brantford, Ontario, when Intertape demanded a 25% reduction in wages and benefits. Many of ECP's Brantford employees had worked for the company for more than 25 years. During the strike, the company replaced its permanent workforce with temporary workers and refused to engage in any meaningful discussions over counter proposals submitted by the union.
Intertape announced in March that it would close the plant in June. The company is refusing to pay severance pay owed to workers under Ontario's Employment Standards Act. The USW is an Intertape shareholder and represents workers at two plants, one in Brantford, Ontario and another in Menasha, Wisconsin. Intertape is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec and Bradenton, Florida.
