Staten Island Synagogue Targeted in Molotov Cocktail Attack
CBS NewsLocale: UNITED STATES

MIDLAND BEACH, Staten Island - A wave of concern and condemnation has swept through the Staten Island community following an attempted attack on Temple Beth El in Midland Beach early Sunday morning. Two Molotov cocktails were thrown at the synagogue on Hylan Boulevard around 3:15 a.m., causing minor damage but thankfully, no injuries. The incident is being investigated by the NYPD as a hate crime, prompting increased security measures at the synagogue and sparking calls for heightened vigilance across the borough's Jewish community.
Rabbi Michael Lerner of Temple Beth El expressed relief that the damage was minimal, but acknowledged the profound impact the event has had on congregants. "While the physical impact was contained, the emotional impact is significant," Rabbi Lerner stated. "This act is a clear attempt to intimidate and instill fear, but we will not be deterred from practicing our faith and serving our community."
The attack comes at a time of rising antisemitism nationally and globally. Data released by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in February 2026 revealed a record number of antisemitic incidents in the previous year, including vandalism, harassment, and assault. The ADL report highlighted a concerning trend of escalating violence targeting Jewish institutions, fueled in part by online extremism and conspiracy theories. Shari Horowitz, President of the Staten Island Board of Rabbis, described the incident as a "wake-up call." "This isn't happening in a vacuum. We've seen an alarming increase in antisemitic rhetoric and actions, and we must be proactive in protecting our community. This means not only increasing security measures, but also fostering dialogue and understanding between different groups." Horowitz emphasized the need for increased community awareness and reporting of hate crimes, urging individuals to speak out against bigotry and intolerance.
Security footage captured the suspects, but authorities are currently withholding details of their appearance to avoid compromising the investigation. The NYPD has dedicated significant resources to the case, including detectives specializing in hate crime investigations. "We are committed to bringing the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice," a police spokesperson stated. "We urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward and contact the police."
Temple Beth El has been a cornerstone of the Midland Beach community for decades, serving not only as a place of worship but also as a center for social and educational activities. The synagogue has a long history of community outreach, providing support to those in need and fostering interfaith dialogue. The attack has deeply shaken the congregation, but has also strengthened their resolve to continue their work.
The incident has prompted a broader discussion about security protocols for religious institutions on Staten Island. Several synagogues and churches are reviewing their security plans, considering upgrades such as enhanced surveillance systems, improved lighting, and increased security personnel. Local officials are also exploring options for providing additional funding for security enhancements. The Borough President's office has announced it will host a town hall meeting next week to address concerns about community safety and discuss strategies for combating hate crimes.
Experts in security and hate crime prevention suggest a multi-faceted approach is crucial. This includes physical security measures, as well as community-based initiatives that promote tolerance and understanding. Dr. Emily Carter, a sociologist specializing in hate groups, notes that "addressing the root causes of antisemitism requires education, dialogue, and a concerted effort to challenge hateful ideologies." She also stresses the importance of building strong relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
The Staten Island community is rallying around Temple Beth El, offering support and solidarity. A vigil is planned for Tuesday evening at the synagogue, where residents of all faiths are invited to stand together against hate and reaffirm their commitment to a peaceful and inclusive community. The incident serves as a stark reminder that vigilance and unity are essential in the face of rising prejudice and intolerance.
