Opportunity House Launches New Transitional Housing Program for Families

READING, Pa. - February 4th, 2026 - Opportunity House, a cornerstone of social services in Berks County, Pennsylvania, today announced the launch of a vital new transitional housing program specifically designed to support families experiencing homelessness. The program, unveiled Tuesday, represents a significant expansion of the organization's longstanding commitment to addressing the complex issue of housing insecurity within the community.
For nearly 53 years, since its founding in 1973, Opportunity House has been a dedicated provider of crucial services to vulnerable populations in Berks County. While the organization has historically offered a broad range of support, this new initiative focuses intensely on the unique challenges faced by families - parents with children - who find themselves without a stable place to live. According to recent data from the Berks County Community Foundation, family homelessness has seen a concerning uptick in the past two years, largely attributed to rising housing costs, stagnant wages, and the lingering economic effects of the 2024 economic slowdown. This program is a direct response to that increasing need.
"It's incredibly important, especially with families with children, to make sure that they have a safe, stable place to live and a place to call home," stated Sarah Lambright, CEO of Opportunity House. "Homelessness disrupts every aspect of a child's life - their education, their health, their social development. Providing that foundational stability is the first, and arguably most important, step towards breaking the cycle."
The new program isn't simply about providing shelter. It offers a holistic, wraparound approach to tackling the root causes of homelessness. Participants will receive not only safe and secure housing - the location of which remains confidential to protect the privacy of residents - but also intensive case management. This involves individualized assessments of each family's needs, development of tailored action plans, and ongoing support in areas such as job training, financial literacy, childcare access, and mental health services.
"We have seen how difficult it can be for some families to get back on their feet," Lambright explained. "It's not enough to just give someone a roof over their head. They need tools and resources to build a sustainable future. Our case managers will work closely with each family to address their specific barriers and help them achieve self-sufficiency."
The funding for this ambitious program is a blend of crucial sources. Private donations from individuals and local businesses form a core component, supplemented by grant funding from both state and federal agencies, as well as philanthropic foundations dedicated to combating homelessness. Opportunity House actively cultivates partnerships with local organizations like the United Way of Berks County and the Berks County Housing Authority to maximize resources and avoid duplication of effort. The long-term sustainability of the program will rely on continued fundraising and advocacy for increased affordable housing options in the region.
While the details of the program's capacity are intentionally limited to protect the privacy of applicants, Opportunity House has confirmed that they are currently accepting applications. Interested families are encouraged to visit OpportunityHouseberks.org to learn more about eligibility requirements and the application process. The organization is also seeking volunteers to provide mentorship, tutoring, and other support services to program participants.
The launch of this program comes at a critical time. Berks County, like many communities across the nation, is facing a growing affordable housing crisis. The availability of affordable housing units has decreased significantly in recent years, while demand continues to rise. This has put immense pressure on families with low incomes, forcing many into homelessness. Opportunity House's initiative represents a proactive step towards addressing this crisis and ensuring that every family in Berks County has a safe and stable place to call home. Looking ahead, Opportunity House plans to evaluate the program's impact and expand its services further, with the ultimate goal of eradicating family homelessness in Berks County entirely.
