803 Point SCRABBLE Game Sets New World Tournament Record As Veteran Champion Beats Younger One

STAMFORD, Conn., Dec. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Joel Sherman, 49, a former World and National SCRABBLE® Champion from the Bronx, NY, has set a new record for the highest game score in a sanctioned SCRABBLE® tournament with an 803-285 win over former National School SCRABBLE® Champion Bradley Robbins, 14, of Windham, NH.  Sherman's record-setting score took place on December 9, 2011 at a rated tournament in Stamford, CT.

Sherman also tied for the most "bingos" (a seven-letter word) in one game with 7.  The bingos played were CRUMPLED (101 points), OUTRATED (72 points), COTHURNI (92 points), TRAVOISE (95 points), SHAKING (111 points), AVENGED (84 points) and AIRLINE (75 points). COTHURNI is a buskin worn by ancient Roman actors. TRAVOISE is a type of sled used to carry injured warriors.

The previous record for highest game score was held by Edward De Guzman of San Francisco with 771 points on July 1, 2010.  Official SCRABBLE® tournaments are sanctioned in the United States and Canada by the North American SCRABBLE® Players Association (NASPA: [ www.scrabbleplayers.org ]).
