Wyoming Seeks Public Input on 3,734-Acre Wildlife Habitat Acquisition
Locale: UNITED STATES

DUBOIS, WY - March 26th, 2026 - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) today announced the opening of a public comment period regarding a significant proposed land acquisition in Sublette County, near Dubois. The department aims to acquire approximately 3,734 acres of land with the explicit goal of bolstering habitat for a variety of crucial Wyoming wildlife species, including mule deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, and numerous others.
This acquisition represents a substantial investment in Wyoming's renowned wildlife resources and reflects the WGFD's commitment to proactive habitat management. The area identified for purchase is considered a critical transitional range for migrating herds and provides vital wintering grounds. Currently, the land experiences pressures from increasing recreational use and potential future development, making its preservation paramount for long-term wildlife health.
"This land acquisition is not just about adding acreage; it's about ensuring the resilience of our wildlife populations in the face of ongoing environmental changes and increasing human activity," explained a spokesperson for the WGFD. "Sublette County is a particularly important region for big game, and securing this parcel will allow us to actively manage the habitat to benefit these animals for generations to come."
Beyond providing secure habitat, the WGFD plans to implement targeted habitat improvement projects on the acquired land. These initiatives may include strategies such as restoring riparian areas, improving forage quality, and mitigating the spread of invasive plant species. The ultimate goal is to create a mosaic of habitat types that cater to the diverse needs of the wildlife community. A detailed management plan will be developed following the completion of the environmental assessment and incorporation of public feedback.
The WGFD is currently undertaking a thorough environmental review process to assess the potential impacts of the land acquisition and subsequent management activities. This includes evaluating potential effects on water resources, vegetation, soil, and other sensitive environmental components. The department anticipates publishing a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) within the next few weeks, making it available for public review and comment.
The EA will outline the proposed project, potential environmental consequences, and mitigation measures designed to minimize any adverse effects. The department encourages all interested parties - landowners, conservation groups, recreational users, and the general public - to participate in the review process.
"Public involvement is a vital component of responsible land management," the spokesperson added. "We value the perspectives and knowledge of the communities we serve, and we are committed to incorporating meaningful feedback into our decision-making process."
The public comment period will remain open until April 26th, 2026. Comments can be submitted through two channels: traditional mail and email. Written comments should be addressed to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Attn: Public Comment, P.O. Box 30020, Cheyenne, WY 82030-0020. Electronic submissions should be sent to publiccomment@wgfd.wyo.gov. All comments, regardless of submission method, will be given equal consideration.
The WGFD website, wgfd.wyo.gov, serves as the central hub for information regarding this project. Visitors can find details about the proposed land acquisition, the environmental review process, and the draft EA when it becomes available. The website will also feature frequently asked questions and contact information for department staff.
This acquisition builds upon the WGFD's ongoing efforts to conserve and enhance wildlife habitat across the state. Recent initiatives include collaborative partnerships with private landowners to implement habitat restoration projects and the establishment of wildlife crossing structures to improve connectivity between fragmented habitats. The WGFD consistently highlights habitat loss as a major threat to wildlife populations, emphasizing the importance of proactive conservation measures like this land acquisition. Experts predict that with continued habitat degradation, iconic species like mule deer and elk will face increasing challenges. Therefore, initiatives such as this, coupled with responsible wildlife management, are crucial for the long-term health of Wyoming's ecosystems.
