Rock Hill Reels After Homicide and Shooting

ROCK HILL, S.C. (February 9, 2026) - The city of Rock Hill is reeling today after a particularly violent Monday that saw police responding to both a homicide and a shooting, raising concerns about a potential escalation of crime within the community.

The Rock Hill Police Department (RHPD) confirmed they were first called to a residence on McGee Street early Monday morning, where officers discovered a deceased individual. The identity of the victim is currently being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Details surrounding the circumstances of the death are scarce at this time, but RHPD has stated they are treating the case as a homicide and are actively investigating.

Just hours later, the RHPD were again dispatched, this time to a local restaurant where a shooting had occurred. One individual was struck by gunfire and immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, authorities report the victim is currently in stable condition. The location of the restaurant has not been publicly released at this time.

These two incidents, occurring within the same day, have prompted a heightened state of alert within the RHPD and a renewed call for public assistance. Police are urging anyone with information related to either the homicide on McGee Street or the shooting at the restaurant to come forward.

"We understand that these events are deeply unsettling for our community," stated Captain Emily Carter of the RHPD in a press briefing held earlier this afternoon. "We are dedicating all available resources to these investigations and are committed to bringing those responsible to justice. However, we cannot do it alone. We rely on the vigilance of our citizens and any information, no matter how small it may seem, could be crucial."

The recent spike in violence comes at a time when Rock Hill, like many cities across the nation, has been experiencing a concerning trend of increased crime rates. While Rock Hill had previously enjoyed a reputation as a relatively safe city, data from the past two years indicates a steady rise in both violent and property crimes. According to preliminary figures released by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Rock Hill saw a 15% increase in reported violent crimes in 2025 compared to the previous year.

Experts suggest several factors may be contributing to this increase, including socioeconomic disparities, a rise in gang activity, and the lingering effects of the pandemic on mental health and social services. The closure of several community centers and after-school programs in recent years due to budget cuts has also been cited as a potential contributing factor, leaving vulnerable youth with fewer positive outlets and increased risk of involvement in criminal activity.

The RHPD has recently announced a series of initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of crime and improving public safety. These include increased foot patrols in high-crime areas, a community policing program designed to foster better relationships between officers and residents, and a partnership with local organizations to provide support services to at-risk individuals and families. They are also exploring the implementation of new technology, such as real-time crime mapping and predictive policing software, to better allocate resources and prevent future incidents.

However, some community leaders argue that these measures are not enough. They are calling for a more comprehensive approach that addresses the underlying social and economic issues that contribute to crime, such as poverty, lack of access to education and job training, and affordable housing shortages. A town hall meeting is scheduled for next week to discuss these issues and explore potential solutions.

The investigations into both the homicide and the shooting are ongoing. The RHPD is asking anyone with information to contact them at (803) 329-7000 or submit a tip through the Rock Hill Crime Stoppers program. WGNO will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
