Polk County 911 Center Prepares for Severe Winter, Moves to New Facility
Locale: UNITED STATES

BOLIVAR, Mo. - February 2nd, 2026 - As winter's grip tightens across the Midwest, the Polk County 911 Center is enacting comprehensive plans to safeguard residents against the potential hazards of inclement weather. Beyond the standard winterization procedures, the center is simultaneously completing a move into a newly constructed, technologically advanced facility designed to significantly enhance emergency response capabilities - a project years in the making.
The center's proactive stance comes as meteorologists predict a potentially severe winter season, with forecasts indicating above-average snowfall and the possibility of extended periods of freezing temperatures. This expectation has prompted a thorough review of emergency protocols and a renewed focus on staff training, specifically addressing the surge in call volumes typically experienced during winter storms.
"We are anticipating a particularly challenging winter, and our priority is ensuring we're fully prepared to handle whatever comes our way," explained Director Sarah Jenkins of the Polk County 911 Center. "Our dispatchers are the first line of defense in many emergency situations, and their ability to remain calm and efficient under pressure is crucial. We've been conducting refresher courses on handling weather-related calls - everything from vehicle accidents on icy roads to medical emergencies stemming from hypothermia and carbon monoxide poisoning."
The training isn't limited to call-taking procedures. Dispatchers are also receiving updated mapping and routing information to account for potentially impassable roads, and are practicing coordinating resources with the Polk County Sheriff's Department, Bolivar Fire Department, and EMS personnel. Inter-agency communication protocols have been reinforced to ensure seamless collaboration during multi-agency responses.
However, the most significant upgrade to Polk County's emergency infrastructure is undoubtedly the newly completed 911 Center. The facility, located on a higher, more accessible elevation just outside of Bolivar, replaces the aging and increasingly cramped former center. It features a hardened structure designed to withstand extreme weather events, including high winds and heavy snow loads. Crucially, the new building is equipped with a backup generator capable of providing uninterrupted power for extended periods, eliminating the risk of communication disruptions during power outages.
The technological advancements within the new facility are equally impressive. The center boasts a state-of-the-art computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, providing dispatchers with real-time access to critical information, including caller location, emergency responder availability, and detailed mapping of the county. The new CAD system is integrated with a Next Generation 911 (NG911) infrastructure, which allows for the seamless integration of multimedia data, such as photos and videos, submitted by citizens during emergency calls. This feature is expected to significantly improve situational awareness for both dispatchers and first responders.
"The old facility was simply no longer adequate to meet the growing demands of our community," Jenkins stated. "The new center is a game-changer. It's not just about having more space; it's about having the tools and technology necessary to provide the highest level of service to our residents, especially when they need us most."
The total cost of the new facility was approximately $4.2 million, funded through a combination of county bonds and state grants. County officials anticipate that the improved emergency response capabilities will translate into faster response times, reduced property damage, and, most importantly, saved lives.
The Polk County 911 Center encourages all residents to take proactive steps to prepare for winter weather. This includes staying informed about weather forecasts through reliable sources like the National Weather Service, assembling an emergency kit with essential supplies such as food, water, blankets, and a first-aid kit, and ensuring that vehicles are properly winterized. Residents are also reminded to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions and to report any hazardous road conditions to the appropriate authorities.
