New City Home Invasion Sparks Fear, Police Increase Patrols

NEW CITY, NY - April 2nd, 2026 - A recent home invasion attempt on River Road has ignited fears amongst residents of New City, prompting increased police patrols and renewed calls for community vigilance. While the victim in Wednesday morning's incident escaped with minor injuries thanks to her courageous actions, the event underscores a worrying trend of escalating attempts targeting homes in the area.

According to the New City Police Department (NCPD), the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 31st. A young woman was awakened by a masked man who had unlawfully entered her home. She bravely confronted the intruder, managing to struggle with him before he ultimately fled the scene. Police Chief Michael O'Connell lauded the woman's courage, stating, "She demonstrated tremendous bravery in confronting the intruder, potentially preventing further harm and aiding in a possible future apprehension."

However, this incident isn't isolated. The NCPD confirms a noticeable uptick in attempted home invasions over the past six months. While many attempts have been thwarted by security systems or the presence of homeowners, the River Road incident represents a successful breach, raising serious concerns about the vulnerability of local residents.

"We've seen a shift in tactics," explains Sergeant Emily Carter, a spokesperson for the NCPD. "Previously, we were mostly dealing with opportunistic burglaries - unlocked doors, open windows. Now, we're seeing more calculated attempts, often involving forced entry and a direct confrontation with residents. It suggests a more desperate and potentially dangerous perpetrator, or multiple perpetrators."

The NCPD is hesitant to definitively link these attempts to a single individual or group, but investigators are exploring several possibilities, including the involvement of a regional crime ring. "We're sharing information with neighboring police departments to identify any patterns and potential connections," Sergeant Carter added. "The similarities in the attempted methods - targeting homes during early morning hours, the use of masks, and a focus on homes with perceived valuables - are certainly raising red flags."

In response to the growing anxieties, the NCPD has increased patrols in known vulnerable areas and is urging residents to take proactive steps to enhance their home security. These include:

  • Securing all doors and windows: Ensure all points of entry are locked, even when at home. Consider upgrading to reinforced doors and window locks.
  • Investing in a home security system: Alarm systems, security cameras, and motion detectors can act as a deterrent and provide valuable evidence in the event of a break-in.
  • Improving outdoor lighting: Well-lit properties are less attractive to potential intruders. Consider motion-activated lights.
  • Trimming landscaping: Overgrown bushes and trees can provide cover for intruders. Keep landscaping trimmed and well-maintained.
  • Joining a Neighborhood Watch program: Collective vigilance is a powerful tool. Neighborhood Watch programs encourage residents to report suspicious activity and look out for one another.

The New City Community Coalition is also organizing a town hall meeting next week to address resident concerns and provide security tips. "We want to empower our community with the knowledge and resources they need to protect themselves and their families," says Coalition President David Miller. "It's crucial that everyone is aware of the risks and takes steps to mitigate them."

Police are still actively investigating the River Road incident and are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to the arrest of the intruder. Anyone with information is asked to contact the New City Police Department at (845) 634-1200. Remember, if you observe any suspicious activity, report it to 911 immediately. The safety of our community depends on it.
